Food for Thought…

Chatting in msn to a friend from Rio today, I mentioned the Virginia Tech massacre, to what he responded “what happened in Virginia yesterday happens in the USA once a year, while in Rio there is around half a dozen kids dying almost every day… ” and “today at least 21 people died in a police confrontation in Rio…”

By this, I do not mean what happened in the USA is meaningless. What I mean is we, Brazilians, do not value things as Americans do. We let things go. We let criminals get away with crimes. We have let things become banal.

If you have any comments or considerations on this topic, please, be my guest. I still don’t know if I am the only one reading my blog, or if anyone else is reading it, too… lol. Just kidding, but almost that!

Massacre on the campus…

• Lone gunman massacres 32 at Virginia Tech
• Gunman chained doors then opened fire on class
• Student: I was one of only four that made it out
• ‘He was very silent, he seemed very thorough’
• It is the deadliest shooting rampage in U.S. history

No words. Again. Massacre at school. Now this is horrendous. There is no logical or illogical explanation for this kind of happening. There is no excuse for this. There is no way back for these parents and families who lost their kids. Just pain…

Friday the 13th

Well, it really doesn’t mean much to me and even though I always catch myself thinking: “Well, it is another Friday the 13^th”, it doesn’t influence on anything I do or won’t do just because of the date.

I dislike horror movies, I don’t know almost anything about Freedy Kruger and Jason. I just know they have been famous characters for decades and who are worshipped by thousands of fans around the world… I guess it is around the world, and that about one year ago, they launched a movie with the two deadly creatures in one movie. It must have been funny. Sorry if I sound ignorant and uninterested, but it is just my taste.

Anyways, what I think is cool about Friday the 13th is the so-called “Halloween parties” that often take place here in Brazil on these dates, where some nightclubs decorate the house properly and people (should) wear costumes. Only in the past few years, Brazilians have started connecting Halloween with October 31^st, but most still don’t know that Halloween and Friday the 13^th are originally two separate things.
